Abstract:

Contains 242 p. diary in German script by Leo Eloesser describing his voyage in 1861 and 1862 to San Francisco via England, New York and Panama; poems in German by Leo Eloesser; typescript copy of letter in English by Arthur Eloesser in 1922 concerning his business association with Heynemann & Co.; two notebooks of Hermann Heynemann containing copies of poems and articles as well as a description in English verse of his voyage from Australia to San Francisco in 1861. The collection does not contain any papers of Dr. Leo Eloesser. Also includes a series of newspaper articles by a different Arthur Eloesser (1870-1938) titled, "Erinnerungen eines Berliner Juden" ("Memories of a Berlin Jew").

Leo Eloesser, 1816-1902, was editor of the German newspaper Abend Post in San Francisco. His son Arthur Eloesser married Molly Heynemann, daughter of Hermann Heynemann. Their son was Leo Eloesser, 1881-1976, a thoracic surgeon.
Hermann Heynemann, 1831-1902, was President of the San Francisco Pioneer Woolen Factory and proprietor of the dry goods firm of Heynemann & Co. from 1861 to 1883.
